Precisely timed sound pulses and continuous pink noise are different interventions. Neither the early memory studies nor the feeling of relaxation proves that an all-night track improves sleep.
What is pink noise?
Pink noise is a broad mix of frequencies with equal energy in each octave. Its power density falls as frequency rises, so the high end is less prominent than in white noise. You might describe it as a soft, even wash. Rain is a useful listening comparison, though an actual rain recording is not necessarily pink noise. See the technical definition from MathWorks.
Brown noise leans further toward the bass. White noise sounds brighter. The color names describe frequency balance, not a particular brain state or a guaranteed effect on sleep.

What did the sleep and memory studies actually test?
Some of the most interesting findings involve closed-loop stimulation. Researchers monitor sleeping participants and time brief sounds to a particular phase of their slow brain oscillations. The timing is part of the intervention.
In a 2013 study by Ngo and colleagues, sound delivered in phase with those oscillations enhanced slow-oscillation activity and declarative memory consolidation. Out-of-phase stimulation did not have the same effect.
A continuous pink-noise track cannot replicate a system that listens to brain activity and responds at a precise moment. Reading that sound helped memory in a laboratory is not a reason to expect a phone speaker to produce the same result.
Even timed stimulation does not always yield a memory benefit. A 2025 home study involving 34 participants found increased slow-oscillation amplitude but no detected improvement in memory performance or vigilance. Its small sample limits the conclusions, but it is another reason to keep expectations modest.
What about playing pink noise all night?
This is the more relevant question for a sound machine or an app. A 2026 randomized laboratory study by Basner and colleagues followed 25 healthy adults across seven nights with different sound conditions. Continuous pink noise at 50 dBA reduced REM sleep compared with the quiet control condition.
Adding pink noise to environmental noise also worsened sleep structure, despite some improvements in fragmentation. Earplugs were the more effective countermeasure in that experiment.
This was a small, short study of healthy adults in a laboratory. It does not settle every question about volume, long-term use, or individual preference. It does challenge the claim that continuous pink noise reliably improves sleep, and the tested volume should not be read as a recommended bedtime setting.
The wider evidence was already uncertain. A 2021 systematic review found very low-quality evidence for continuous noise as a sleep aid, with some studies reporting benefit and others disruption.
If you like pink noise, keep the experiment small
You can enjoy a sound without asking it to improve your memory. The following suggestions are a cautious way to explore your preference, not a proven pink-noise sleep protocol.
- Try it while you are awake first. Listen during a quiet wind-down period. If it gets on your nerves, there is no reason to persevere.
- Use the lowest comfortable level. Do not keep increasing it to drown out every other sound. Hearing risk depends on both loudness and duration, and pink noise is still sound exposure.
- Limit playback if you only want it for winding down. A timer can end the sound after that period. No specific timer length has been established as a sleep-enhancing dose.
- Notice the next morning, too. Feeling relaxed at bedtime is one observation. Waking more often or feeling less rested is another. Stop if the sound seems to make sleep worse.
Keep the basics steady while you compare. NHLBI guidance includes a regular sleep schedule and a quiet, cool, dark room. Reducing a preventable source of noise is a sensible first step before covering it with another sound.
When quiet is the better choice
If your bedroom is already quiet and you sleep comfortably, you do not need to add pink noise. There is no sleep routine to complete and no benefit you are missing by leaving the speaker off.
If sound causes discomfort or ringing in your ears, stop listening and seek advice if symptoms persist. These tips are for adults; they are not guidance for infant sound-machine use.
Persistent trouble sleeping deserves more than a new audio setting. If it regularly affects how you feel or function, talk with a healthcare professional about the cause and suitable treatment.
A few common questions
Does pink noise increase deep sleep?
Some precisely timed stimulation studies change slow-oscillation activity. That is not evidence that a continuous track increases deep sleep at home. The distinction between these methods is central to interpreting the research.
Is pink noise safer than white noise?
The softer listening impression does not establish a safety advantage. Level, duration, and your response matter. There is no universal phone-volume percentage that guarantees a safe sound level.
Can pink noise help me relax without helping sleep?
Yes, those are different experiences. You might simply enjoy the sound while reading or winding down. That preference is enough, without turning it into a claim about sleep stages.
